Recent Disciplinary Incidents & Zero Tolerance Policy for Hate Speech
The Board, in executive session at the July 19 monthly board meeting, reviewed several recent disciplinary incidents. The Board was disturbed by a recent rise in offensive language, including one specific incident of hate speech and racial epithets. This incident was perpetrated by a minor to another minor unfortunately, and was extremely hurtful to the recipient of said epithets. While disciplinary action has been taken against the members involved, the Board wishes to remind ALL the members that we have been and will remain an inclusive community, and that we have instructed the NVPools staff to promptly eject and report to the Board anyone who attacks another member, whether physically OR verbally. We take this very seriously, and future incidents WILL result in the suspension of pool access, and could even rise to the reversion of a membership. We also encourage parents of minors to consider sharing the substance of this message with your appropriately-aged children, reminding them that "our words have power to build up or tear down," and that hurtful speech can have long-lasting consequences for those on the receiving end.
One relevant additional reminder to these incidents. We ask that adult members keep in mind when interacting with NVPools lifeguard staff that these employees of NV are teenagers, not adults, and do not have authorization to resolve rule violations. Lifeguard staff are required to report rule violations to their adult NVPools manager and the Pool Board (depending on the severity of the event), and to deliver an incident report to the Board, at which point the Board may take formal action after quick deliberation. Please do not attempt to cajole or influence outcomes for resolution of pool rule violations with NVPools lifeguards directly. Special Activities / Extracurricular Events Update
CALLING ALL VOLUNTEERS - Our Special Activities board member, Bethany Quick, has tentatively scheduled a "Tween" Late Night for younger kids/tweens ages 8-12 for August 5 from 8-10pm. We do not currently have an adult chaperone / volunteer to run point on this event. Please e-mail specialactivities@greenbriar.org if you are interested in volunteering to run this event, which would include being at the Pool for set up and break down and managing the activities during the event. If no volunteers step up, the Tween Late Night will be canceled.
