Greenbriar Pool Club Closing for the 2020 Season - 7/2/2020 Update
Earlier this week the Pool Board of Directors met and voted unanimously to keep the pool closed for the remainder of the 2020 season. This was a difficult decision to make and one that was not taken lightly. We understand that many of our members will be disappointed with this decision, but our ultimate concern is over the safety and well being of our members. Virginia remains under a state of emergency in response to COVID-19 and the Forward Virginia Phase 3 Guidelines still say that Virginians are "safer at home." The multiple mandatory requirements placed on us if we did open would significantly change/degrade the pool experience for members in comparison to “normal” operations.
In addition to the safety concerns around opening during a pandemic, liability was also a factor in our decision to remain closed. Our insurance policies do not protect the pool against claims related to COVID-19 and a waiver would provide limited protection against lawsuits. Additionally, Board members had significant reservations over teenage lifeguards being responsible for the implementation and enforcement of the mandatory requirements in the Phase 3 Guidelines. The membership survey results also indicated that a majority of members (56%) would prefer to remain closed.
Moving forward, the Board will begin to work with Member Splash on the logistics of issuing refunds or credits. We expect to have more details to share with members via email later this summer.
We know that summer doesn't feel like summer without the pool, but we hope that you and your family are safe and healthy and that you can find alternative ways to enjoy the season. We're already looking ahead to a 2021 season that will be better than ever.
