Pool Board Update- Annual Meeting, Election, and Budget Update
Good afternoon, members!
Next week we have our annual meeting, open to the general membership, (Wednesday, February 19th, 7:30 pm; Greenbriar East Elementary School Cafeteria ) where we will elect three Board positions, and we hope to cover our 2025 budget.
I want to introduce you to the five candidates running for the three Board positions. A message sent to all members covers club financial matters, which is a ‘members-only’ thing and shouldn’t be posted here.
Mr. Jeff McCurry will be retiring from the Board, and will not be running this year. Jeff has served on the board for quite a while, and he will be missed. Sorry, Jeff, but just as there was no compensation for serving on the Board, there's no pension or gold watch when you cease serving. Nonetheless you have the gratitude of the club and your fellow board members for the excellent work you've done over the years.
There are three Board positions up for election (to a three year term) this year. A member doesn't get elected to a specific role - the membership votes to place a member in a Board 'At-Large' position and then the Board will elect it's officers (President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer), and the President will propose additional roles (such as overseeing pool ops and maintenance, overseeing the teams, etc) for at-large members, with the concurrence of the Board.
We have five candidate running for the three positions this year. Each candidate is listed below, in alphabetical order, along with a short biography that they provided.
Andrew Berger - I spent the first half of my professional career working in finance and the latter half in federal law enforcement. In both positions, I've worked closely with others to accomplish the mission. I volunteer as a coach for my children’s sports teams. I am a current Watch D.O.G.S member at Greenbriar East Elementary School and an assistant den leader for the Boy Scouts. My family and I have been members of the pool since we moved to Greenbriar in 2018. Since then, our family has grown to three young (and lively) children. Two of my children participate in the Greenbriar swim team. We eagerly await pool season each year as it’s central to our summer plans to spend time with our family and friends. I have thoroughly enjoyed seeing the improvements of the pool grounds over the last few seasons (the new playgrounds are awesome!). I am eager to contribute to the recent progress to make the pool an even better place for its members. I believe my skills, background, and perspective could be valuable to the Greenbriar Pool Club as a pool board member.
Angie Lander - Angie Lander and her family relocated to Greenbriar in 2019 and became members of the pool club in 2020. They quickly fell in love with the pool and the sense of community it fosters. Their two daughters, Ellie and Ingrid, are both active participants on the swim team, with Ellie also serving as a volunteer coach for the Winter Swim Team this year. Ingrid is a member of the dive team as well. Since joining the club, Angie and her husband, Steve, have been dedicated volunteers for both the Greenbriar Swim and Dive teams. In 2024, Angie became one of the Dive Team Representatives, where she supported Paula and Julena with communications and helped manage the team website. With 15 years of experience in the nonprofit sector, Angie brings a wealth of expertise in volunteer management, communications, fundraising, and operations.
Tim Metzinger - Timothy (Tim) Metzinger has been a pool member for over fifteen years, and has been involved with pool activities, such as serving the dive team and various roles on the board of directors, for twelve years. He enjoys the strong culture that the pool club has developed in fifty years, and looks forward to maintaining that culture in the years ahead.
Charlie Passut - Charlie Passut currently serves on the Board as secretary and is also liaison with our members who play pickleball. He and his family have been members since moving to Greenbriar in 2013.
Mark Thompson - Mark Thompson has been a resident of Northern Virginia since 1980 and has called Greenbriar home for the past 12 years. A graduate of Lake Braddock High School and George Mason University, Mark has been a Certified Public Accountant for over 25 years. Mark provides tax preparation, auditing and other accounting services working with a diverse range of businesses and individuals, including Greenbriar residents. Mark's deep roots in the community are evident through his family's active involvement. Both of his daughters, Haley and Emma, are members of the Greenbriar Swim Team, and Mark himself serves as a certified stroke and turn judge. The Thompson family are enthusiastic members of the Greenbriar Pool Club, spending many days a week at the pool during the season. Mark even played a key role in the addition of the third pickleball court a few years ago. With his extensive background in accounting and finance, coupled with his collaborative spirit and strong ties to Greenbriar, Mark would be a valuable asset to the Greenbriar Pool Club Board. His expertise would undoubtedly help the Board achieve its short-term and long-term goals for years to come.
To vote for a candidate, you MUST attend the meeting on Wednesday, February 19th, at the Greenbriar East Cafeteria. Each membership will receive ONE ballot, and the ballots will be counted that evening and the results will be announced on February 20th, along with the results of the Board's internal election of officers.
Best Wishes,
Timothy (Tim) Metzinger
President
