Fall Update from the Pool Board

Fall News from the Pool!

The pool closing for the season is going along well, all the sunbrellas are down, the pool is covered, and everything is put away.

The board meeting for October will be held on October 28th, rather than the 21st, in the Greenbriar East Library, to accommodate director schedules.  As always, members are welcome to observe, and if you wish to present a topic/issue to the Board, please send a message to pool@greenbriar.org by the 21st so that you can be added to the agenda.

Pool Layout Study

Over the decades, there has been concern expressed about the dive well at our pool.  The 10 foot depth is too shallow by current standards for our one-meter diving board.  In 2014 the Board and some members did some research into whether it would be possible to deepen our existing dive well to be in line with current standards.  Back then the (informal) research indicated that there might be a major drainage line near the pool, or an exclusion zone that would prevent digging.

The Board feels that it's time to look at the pool layout and dive well depth again. While the County hasn't told us to pull out the one-meter board, and the Northern Virginia Swim League permits dive meets here, we ARE tagged by NVSL as a 'shallow pool'.   The Board feels that the club needs to know exactly what is or is not possible as far as increasing the depth of our dive well, and this time we want it all documented, including county input on possible construction.

We consulted with NVPools, who told us that they knew other pools in similar situations, and they recommended an architect who has worked with those pools to alter their pools.   We hired this architect to determine our options so that we could have a dive well supporting two one-meter boards.  He will work with the county to determine what IS possible, and will provide rough-order-of-magnitude (ROM) estimates for the costs/time of those options.  That will give the club the information needed should a situation arise where we MUST upgrade the facility or lose the one-meter board.

Rest assured that the Board is NOT planning to make any changes in the pool layout at this time.  It's the opinion of the current President that any such investment of club funds for a capital improvement of the facility would have to be approved by the entire membership, either at the annual membership meeting or a special membership meeting.  But we need to have information we can trust should those decisions be necessary.  And of course, we want to keep the membership informed of things like this.
